The performance-acquisition group enters Canada with a long-established affiliate brand as Alberta opens its regulated market
Vectiq Inc. has acquired PlayCanada.com from Catena Media US, giving the performance-acquisition group an established Canadian iGaming media brand at a key moment for the country’s regulated market.
The acquisition marks Vectiq’s public debut and gives the Nevada-incorporated group a national affiliate asset with recognised coverage across casino, sports betting, poker and slots.
PlayCanada.com has a domain history dating back to 2000 and is one of Canada’s longer-standing iGaming media destinations. Its coverage includes major provincial markets such as Ontario and Alberta, both central to Canada’s regulated online gaming development.
The timing is important. Alberta opened its regulated online gaming market to private operators on 13 July 2026, becoming the second major Canadian province after Ontario to allow a competitive model for licensed online casinos and sportsbooks.
Alberta’s government has said that before the regulated market launched, around 70% of online gambling activity in the province took place through unregulated offshore platforms. The new framework is designed to bring more of that activity into a supervised market with player protection tools, responsible gaming requirements and a provincewide self-exclusion system.
That creates a clear role for affiliate and media brands. Players moving from grey-market habits to regulated platforms need local, province-specific information. Operators entering the market need compliant acquisition channels with search visibility, editorial credibility and established audience trust.
Vectiq is positioning PlayCanada.com as the anchor of that strategy.
Pablo Ferreira, CEO of Vectiq
“PlayCanada.com is a brand that Canadians have trusted for a generation. Alberta’s regulated market will create an enormous demand for credible, province-literate guidance for players, and PlayCanada.com’s editorial depth and national footprint put us in an exceptional position to meet it.”
The seller, Catena Media, described the transaction as part of its MRKTPLAYS+ strategy, which focuses on backing market partners able to unlock value through local expertise.
Pierre Cadena, Chief Operating Officer of Catena Media
“PlayCanada.com is passing to a partner well placed to take it further. Vectiq’s Canadian expertise and local presence make it ideally suited to grow the brand as Alberta opens up.
“This is our MRKTPLAYS+ strategy in action — backing strong partners to unlock more value in their markets. Canada remains an important market for Catena Media, and we’re glad to see PlayCanada.com in good hands as it enters its next chapter.”
Vectiq’s portfolio now includes PlayCanada.com and MaxSpinz.com, an Ontario-focused casino and sweepstakes review platform.
The group says its model combines editorial content, SEO, paid media acquisition, free-to-play game mechanics and CRM. Internally, the approach is described as “an affiliate built like an operator.”
That model reflects a wider change in iGaming affiliation. Search traffic alone is no longer enough. Modern affiliates need stronger editorial standards, compliant messaging, first-party engagement, retention tools and market-by-market regulatory knowledge.
Alberta is likely to test that model quickly. New operators need visibility, but advertising and acquisition must sit within a regulated structure. Affiliate brands with recognised domains and localised guidance may benefit if they can keep player content accurate, responsible and compliant.
Ontario remains the reference point. Its iGaming Ontario framework helped reshape the Canadian market by giving licensed private operators a regulated route to players. Alberta is now the next major test of that approach.
PlayCanada.com gives Vectiq a brand with national reach at the moment Alberta becomes a major focus for operators, suppliers and affiliates. The site’s existing provincial coverage, including Alberta regulatory guides and retail casino content, gives the group a base for local market expansion.
The acquisition also shows continued movement in the North American affiliate sector. Established media assets are being repositioned around regulated markets, domain authority and operator acquisition value.
Vectiq stressed that it is an iGaming affiliate and performance-acquisition group, not a gambling operator. PlayCanada.com operates as an affiliate media brand directing players to licensed and regulated operators, and does not hold a gambling licence.
As Alberta’s regulated market starts to scale, credible player guidance and compliant acquisition will become more important. Vectiq’s purchase of PlayCanada.com places the group directly in that flow, with a brand already known in the Canadian iGaming space.
