URUGUAY – Light at the end of tunnel with new Punta del Este casino
Cardoso: “The US$400M property is the largest private investment in Maldonado’s history”
The good news from Uruguay couldn’t have come at a better time when all over the region there is great anguish due to the coronavirus pandemic. Alleviating this a little, is news that the second stage of the tender to build the Cipriani integrated resort will have been approved for construction of the Cirpiani Ocean Resort and Club Residences Punta del Este.

Yesterday’s reporting by El País states that the Minister of Tourism, Germán Cardoso, had also commented: “At the end of April we will be proceeding with the final stage of the tender. It is a US$400 million property, the largest private investment in the history of the Maldonado province.”
Construction of the new IR will be where the old Hotel San Rafael de Punta del Este was located, and will feature a 5-star hotel, apartments, cinema, theatre, restaurants and other luxury-oriented services, as reported by Giuseppe Cipriani, president of the developing company.
The hotel and residences will be decorated by the Florentine architect Michele Bonan. All furniture, from light tables to door handles, was designed by Bonan and produced by Italian artisans. Bonan was chosen for other previous Cipriani projects as he perfectly interprets the family’s luxury style with designs that always maintain a touch of the Florentine essence, as required for hotels, restaurants, rooms and even yachts in different parts of the world ranging from Hong Kong to Cairo.
The entire Cipriani Ocean Resort and Club Residences Punta del Este complex has been designed by the Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly, who in the first instance presented a very different, high-rise project that was the subject of some questioning for its possible environmental impact in the area.
The future resort is destined to change the postcard view of Punta del Este as the Hotel Conrad did in years gone by. The Cipriani Ocean Resort and Club Residences Punta del Este has countless amenities that reinforce its top-notch status. It will offer spa services, hairdressers, a sports area with personal trainers, 24-hour room service, a business centre, a large ballroom, high-end designed gardens, valet parking, cleaning services, exclusive boutiques, nursery, personal shopping, delivery of international newspapers, butler services and the emblematic Cipriani restaurants, amongst other amenities.
