Kennedy Lewis has taken a controlling interest in the West Virginia resort, with casino operations continuing during the regulatory review
The transaction gives The Greenbrier additional financial backing after a prolonged period of debt disputes, while leaving the Justice family involved in the ownership and management of the historic resort.
Kennedy Lewis Investment Management has acquired a 51% controlling interest in the new ownership structure, according to documents reviewed by West Virginia media. The Justice Family Group retains the remaining 49%.
The partners said the joint venture will provide capital and operational expertise for long-term investment in the resort, its facilities and the guest experience.
Kennedy Lewis has appointed Lloyd Nathan as chairman of The Greenbrier’s Board of Directors. Nathan has worked across hospitality, gaming, real estate, investment and large-scale development. His previous experience includes almost a decade with MGM Resorts International.
David Chene, Managing Partner at Kennedy Lewis Investment Management, said:
“The Greenbrier is a truly unique American institution, with a remarkable history, dedicated employees and a special connection to West Virginia and its guests.
“By combining Kennedy Lewis’s financial, strategic and operational resources, Lloyd Nathan’s thoughtful and proven oversight as chairman and the Justice Family’s deep local roots, we have built a powerful platform to invest in the property’s long-term future and reinforce its standing among the premier destination resorts in the world.”
Investment in the resort’s future
The Greenbrier is located in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The Justice family acquired the resort in 2009 and will remain involved following the change in control.
Jill Justice, Director of Operations at the Justice Family Group, said:
“Today marks an exciting new chapter for The Greenbrier and an important moment for everyone who loves this resort.
“This property is so much more than a resort. It is part of the history of West Virginia, an economic anchor for this community and a place where generations of families have celebrated the most important moments of their lives.
“Our collaboration provides the financial strength, expertise and long-term investment needed to protect everything that makes The Greenbrier special.”
Nathan said the partners intend to invest in the property without changing the characteristics that have shaped its identity.
Lloyd Nathan, Chairman of The Greenbrier’s Board of Directors, said:
“The Greenbrier is one of the truly irreplaceable destination resorts in the United States. Very few properties can match its history, natural beauty, scale, amenities and emotional connection with generations of guests.
“Our intent is not to change what makes The Greenbrier special but to invest in its future, enhance what makes it exceptional and ensure America’s Resort continues to thrive for generations to come.”
Casino remains open during regulatory review
The West Virginia Lottery Commission is still reviewing the new ownership and board structure before deciding whether to grant final approval.
The casino may continue operating during that process, provided the new board members who have not yet received regulatory approval exercise no authority over casino operations.
The Greenbrier will remain fully operational during the transition. Existing hotel reservations, meetings, conferences, weddings and other scheduled events will continue as planned.
