Chiquinquirá Lottery returns with more than COP$36 Billion in prizes

The Lotería de Chiquinquirá returns after 22 years with a 19 September draw linked to the Sorteo Extraordinario de Colombia

Colombia’s lottery sector is bringing back one of Boyacá’s historic draws, with the return of the Lotería de la Villa Republicana de Chiquinquirá after 22 years.

The lottery returns to the market in association with the Sorteo Extraordinario de Colombia. The draw is scheduled for 19 September 2026 and will offer up to $36.7 billion Colombian Pesos (US$11M) in prizes.

According to Coljuegos President Marco Emilio Hincapié, the relaunch is the result of joint work between the lottery sector and the National Council of Games of Chance, which has been working to strengthen the industry across Colombia’s territories.

Marco Emilio Hincapié, President of Coljuegos

“We have a sales projection of approximately $3 billion for the draw. In addition, we estimate that more than $360 million will be collected for health in the municipality of Chiquinquirá.”

The approved prize plan includes a top prize of $15 billion. Tickets will cost $20,000 and will be available across Colombia.

For Coljuegos, the return of the Chiquinquirá lottery has both economic and cultural value. The draw is linked to the city’s identity and to the wider importance of Chiquinquirá in Colombia’s religious and national history.

Marco Emilio Hincapié, President of Coljuegos

“This important draw will not only be in the hearts of the people of the municipality and the department of Boyacá, but also in the hearts of all Colombians, because the Virgin of Chiquinquirá is the patroness of Colombia.”

Hincapié also referred to Law 2578 of 2026, signed by President Gustavo Petro, which officially established 9 July as a national holiday in honour of the date when the Virgin of Chiquinquirá was proclaimed patroness by Pope Pius VII in 1829.

The return of the lottery comes at a time when Coljuegos has been emphasising the role of legal games of chance in generating resources for health. Lottery sales remain an important channel for territorial contributions, particularly when extraordinary draws are linked to local and regional development.

For Chiquinquirá, the relaunch gives the municipality a national platform and a direct source of projected health funding. For the wider Colombian lottery sector, it adds another extraordinary draw to the market and supports efforts to keep traditional lottery products visible to players.

Hincapié also reminded players to buy lottery tickets only through authorised points of sale.

That message is important for the legal market. A national draw with strong cultural recognition can attract broad public interest, but it also requires clear distribution controls, authorised sales channels and consumer confidence.
