Six internet providers have 48 hours to implement the court-mandated DNS blocks following validation by Chile’s casino regulator
Chile’s Telecommunications Undersecretariat (Subtel) has notified six internet service providers that they must block 37 additional domains associated with online betting and gambling platforms.
Entel, Movistar, Claro, GTD, WOM and VTR have 48 hours from receipt of the notification to implement the measure through Domain Name System blocking.
The action follows decisions by Chile’s Supreme Court and the Santiago Court of Appeals. The list was submitted to Subtel after being reviewed by the Superintendence of Gambling Casinos (SCJ).
The domains, subdomains and mirror sites are associated with platforms including Betano, Betsson, Rojabet, Estelarbet, Betcris, KTO Bet, 1xBet, Juega en Línea Chile, Marathonbet, Betway, Betfair, Betsala, bet365, Mi Casino and Sportingbet.
Court backs targeted DNS blocking
According to Subtel’s technical report, the Santiago Court of Appeals considered DNS blocking of specifically identified domains to be an appropriate method of enforcing the judgment.
The targeted approach was selected because of its specificity and comparatively lower risk of unintentionally restricting access to lawful online services.
The internet providers must confirm implementation directly to the Santiago Court of Appeals and send Subtel a copy of their report stating the precise date and time when each block became effective.
Procedure covers new mirror sites
The process begins when Lotería de Concepción or an assisting third party identifies domains, redirects, subdomains or mirror sites associated with unauthorised online gambling platforms and submits them to the SCJ.
The regulator then determines whether the addresses correspond to online betting or gambling services. Once validated, Subtel formally communicates the list to the six internet providers for implementation within 48 hours.
Because operators can introduce new domains and mirror sites, the procedure will continue to be applied to additional addresses that are specific, verifiable and previously validated by the SCJ.
The framework also includes mechanisms for correcting errors or addressing cases in which DNS blocking inadvertently affects legitimate services.
The latest instruction follows an earlier Subtel order requiring the same providers to block 42 online betting URLs, demonstrating the continuing nature of the court-supervised enforcement process.
