Growth in customers and customer visits achieved across all Rank Group businesses has been reported as a key event in the company’s half year results to 30 June 2010. Customers were up 11.9% to more than 2.5 million and customer visits were up 3.6% to 11.3 million. Average spend per visit also rose 1.5% to £22.48. There was other good news for the company – Grosvenor Casinos’ customers exceeded one million for the first time and Mecca Bingo visits were up for the first time in over a decade.
Ian Burke, chief executive of The Rank Group Plc said: “I am encouraged by the Group’s performance during the first half of 2010. All of our businesses have achieved growth in revenue as a result of increased numbers of customers and customer visits. We have engaged with our customers to identify the changes that we needed to make to our products and services; we have strengthened our senior management team in order to deliver performance change; and we have stepped up our capital investment to support the growth plans of the businesses.”
Group revenue, before adjustment for free bets, promotions and customer bonuses, was up from £266 million in the first half of 2009 to £281.1 million this year.

Group operating profit after exceptional items of £66.1 million more than doubled the 2009 figure of £31.6 million. Rank announced that three new-build G Casinos would open by the end of 2012 and said the refinement of the Mecca Full House concept would continue (Full House Destination Clubs, aimed principally at women, provide entertainment based around social gaming operated under the bingo clubs licensing regime and are ‘very, very pink’).
Ian Burke concluded. “In spite of a challenging environment for consumer-facing businesses, the Group has made sustained progress and enjoys a strong balance sheet.” (E-07.29.10)
